The Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) was a government-backed scheme, administered by Ofgem, which paid owners of renewable heating systems — including ground source heat pumps — a quarterly payment over seven years to help offset the higher upfront cost of installation.
The Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive closed to new applications on 31 March 2022. Households already accredited under the scheme continue to receive their payments for the remainder of their seven-year term.
Renewable heating for homes in England and Wales is now supported through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, which is also administered by Ofgem. Rather than payments spread over several years, it provides an upfront grant towards the cost of replacing a fossil fuel heating system with a heat pump.
To qualify, the system generally needs to be installed by an MCS certified installer and the property must meet the scheme’s eligibility criteria. Grant levels and the rules around them are set by government and are reviewed from time to time, so it is always worth checking the current position on GOV.UK before you commit — or simply ask us, and we will talk you through where things stand.
