The presence of iron is probably one of the most common contaminants in private water supplies. The maximum levels for iron and manganese in potable water (drinking water) are 0.2 milligrams per litre (mg/l) and 0.05 mg/l, respectively. High levels of iron and manganese can result in discoloured water and staining of sanitary ware and clothing. Iron stains a browny, orange colour; manganese leaves black particles on fixtures and pipe work and sometimes appears oily on the surface of the water.

Bacterial Iron – Slime depositing in toilet tanks or fouling water filters and softeners is a good indication of the presence of bacterial iron. Better described as iron biofouling, the iron bacteria problem is both complex and widespread. It attacks wells and water systems around the world in all sorts of aquifer environments, both contaminated and pristine. In some places, it causes great damage; in others, it is considered a minor nuisance.

Iron removal units are usually large back washable cylinders containing a special media, prior to the cylinder is usually an aeration system to start the oxidisation process.
