Chlorine is a very strong oxidant that kills many micro-organisms. Chlorination is the process of adding chlorine to water as a method of water purification to make it fit for human consumption.
Chlorination is mainly used on systems where the point of use is away from the source, storage tanks are being used or where a double-barrier system is required.
A chlorine-dosing pump will add a carefully measured amount of diluted chlorine (the chlorine is usually diluted using reverse osmosis water) to the system as the water passes into a tank. The amount of chlorine in the water needs to be monitored as the amount required for effective treatment will vary in line with the water quality. It is important that the level stays within the recommended limits, too little and not all the contaminants will be destroyed, too much is bad for human health.
Chlorine is effective against almost all bacteria and viruses as well as algae, fungi, some minerals and man-made chemicals pollutants. As with mains water a small amount of disinfectant is intentionally left in the water at the end of the treatment process to reduce the risk of re-contamination in the distribution system.
FWT can supply and install small – medium scale chlorine dosing systems however there are many options available that vary from basic installations to automatic systems with integral chlorine residual monitoring. In some circumstances, for example, a GSM alarm system can be installed to assist in ensuring a continued supply of chlorine is being dosed into the line.
Although they can be used in domestic applications additional consideration should be given to the requirement for chemical handling and therefore for single domestic properties it may be that an ultraviolet unit is more appropriate.

Can be used to add chlorine to a system where an electric supply is not available.

Add a measured dose of chlorine to the system either on a time clock basis or using the flow rate via a pulse meter.

Chlorine is usually diluted using a mixture of chlorine and reverse osmosis water. This solution is stored in the drum for the pump to draw from. The reverse osmosis water prevents the solution crystallising and affecting the pump.

Small scale chlorine dosing system installed in a plant shed at a local farm.

This is a large system installed at a local hospital that uses a private water supply.
